Just days before his seventh birthday, Alfred's son, Clarence, drowned while in his father's care. Following the tragic event, Alfred, became an alcoholic - alcoholism being the "severe illness" that he was suffering from at his death. Alfred committed suicide the year after the death of his son by jumping from a nearby fence and hanging himself from a limb of an old willow tree.
