HEDDING - Mrs. Emeroy N. Hedding, born in the town of Malone, Franklin county, N.Y., July 28, 1813, was the eldest child of John and Nancy [Moses] Lewis. She became the wife of Elijah M. Hedding, a nephew of Bishop Elijah Hedding, of the Methodist Episcopal Church, in the year 1831, and the new home was established in Bellmont. In those early days this town was only a part of the Adirondack wilderness, and the home of the youthful pair was for some years a log cabin in the woods but with stout hearts they set to work to make the wilderness blossom as the rose, and so far succeeded as to convert from five to seven hundred acres of the wilderness into valuable farm lands with a brick residence and abundance of comfortable outbuildings thereon. Adding not a little to the cares of these busy years, and as the fruits of their union, six sons and five daughters were born; of these four sons and two daughters survive their mother: Marcus, Charles, Sherman and Elijah Hedding, Mrs. G. L. Havens, of Denver, Col., and Mrs. William Randal, of Plattsburg, N.Y. Two of Mrs. Hedding's brothers and a sister also survive her, Abram C. Lewis, of Boston, Mass., John C. Lewis, of Bellmont, N.Y., and Mrs. E. M. Pike, of Canton, N.Y. In the early part of 1845, under the labors of the Rev. Charles Wilbur, both herself and husband were converted and became active members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Their home became a resting place of the early itinerant preachers, who like them were pioneers in this section of country. Once or twice they had the honor to entertain Bishop Hedding. For the last thirteen years of her life Mrs. Hedding was a widow, living most of that time with her son Elijah, and now and then making short visits to the homes of her other children. While visiting her son Marcus at Dannemora, N.Y., this aged mother in Israel fell asleep in Jesus, Nov. 4, 1884 [sic]. Although a great sufferer in her last illness, which was mercifully brief, she bore her pain with Christian fortitude and without a murmur. Her remains were brought to Bellmont Center for burial, and the funeral services were conducted by the writer Nov. 7, 1894. Her four sons acted as bearers, and tenderly laid all that is mortal to rest beside the loved ones gone before in the midst of the scenes of her long and active life. JOHN BRAGG
