Picture that accompanied the article "Rev. James Battle Avirett," Confederate Veteran, Volume XX (July 1912), page 336. The article said that Dr. Avirett was born on Lock Katherine Plantation, on Tar River in Onslow Co., NC, the son of James Alfred Avirett and Serena Thomas Avirett. He was one of the first chaplains in the Confederate army. The picture of him (above) was taken at the time of the dedication of the monument to the memory of the Lexington cadets who fell in the Battle of New Market, VA, which is on the campus of the Virginia Military Institute at Lexington.
