US Senator, Presidential Cabinet Secretary. He moved to Spokane, Washington, in 1902, graduated from the law department of the University of Washington, in 1917 and was an assistant instructor at the University of Washington, (1916-17). During World War I, he served as a Corporal in the 12th Infantry Regiment, US Army. After the war, he was admitted to the bar in 1919 and commenced to practice law in Seattle, Washington. In 1935, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate and served until 1940. Not a candidate for renomination, he was appointed United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Washington. He resigned as District Judge when President Harry S. Truman appointed him Secretary of Labor in 1945 and served until his death at age 53.
