Beverly Jane Mapes, 75, died Tuesday (May 29, 2007) at Via Christi Regional Medical Center St. Francis, Harry Hynes in Wichita.
She was born on May 24, 1932, in Gardner to Ray and Bonnie Green. They preceded her in death. She was the fourth child out of seven. On Sept. 8, 1950, she married Arland Mapes in Gardner. This began her adventure as an Army wife. She was a talented oil painter and showed her paintings in art fairs, winning many ribbons. She also was gifted at ceramic making and taught it to others. She owned her own ceramics shop in Natoma. She ran the office of a marina resort, which she co-owned in the Lake of the Ozarks, Mo. She also owned and operated the first Victorian gift shop in that area. She was known as an open-minded person with a willingness to learn and explore new things. Her friends said of her, "To know her is to love her."

Survivors include son, Shan and Cheryl Mapes of Newton; sister, Lois Corbin of Overland Park; brothers; Jimmy Green of Arizona and Roy Neal Green of Missouri; sister, Ginger Suellentrop of Osage Beach, Mo.; brother, Larry Green of Sedgwick; sister, Patty McFarland of Princeton; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton with family present from 1 to 3 p.m.

Service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First Christian Church in Newton with the Rev. Gary Bell officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton. Memorials may be made to American Lung Association or First Christian Church Puppet Ministry in care of the funeral home.
