|Artist Unknown, "Ashe-Moses Family Group", ca. 1845, oil on canvas.|
North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh.
Col. Samuel Ashe sits on the porch surrounded by his family, including eldest daughter Mary Porter Ashe Moses (at center) and her husband Dr. Simon Gratz Moses. The painting may depict the porch of one of the Ashe family homes in North Carolina. However, the picture was painted in Saint Louis, Missouri where the Moses family had relocated in 1841. And the portrait of Col. Ashe is posthumous. Col. Ashe died about ten years earlier--several years before Mary Porter Ashe's marriage to Dr. Moses.
