Judge was the oldest of five children, born in a home with only two rooms and a porch. As a young man he was "bound out" to a taylor to learn that trade. He also clerked in a store, and taught school. In 1857 he entered Abingdon College from which he was graduated with honors (and a Master of Arts degree) in 1862. About this time he was ordained to be a minister.

He married Elvira J. Whitman, whom he had met in college, on August 21, 1862. In 1863 he was called to teach English and science at Abingdon College. In 1871 Judge moved his family to California where he was called to College City, Colusa County, California to open Pierce Christian College. So on Sept. 14, 1874 he became the first president of that college. He also taught at the college. In 1883 Judge took a similar position at Washington College in Irvington, California, where in addition to teaching he had a prune orchard.

In 1892 he gave up teaching and fulfilled a life-long dream to visit the Holy Land. For 20 years he preached in churches without payment. He was known for spreading joy and light. It was his character to do so.
