The company operated in Rockford until 1964, when it was bought by Babcock-Wilcox. Fletcher held many patents on his wood working machines. The Family became very wealthy.
The residence Hall built in 1911, for 100000.00 is named after him. The Barnes Mansion was built by William Fletcher Barnes in 1893, now houses the Burpee Museum / Offices in Rockford his brother Franklin? Barnes lived very close, across the block on Church street.
A news paper reports On the occasion of their 25th wedding anniversary, they entertained 175 guests. "W.F. Barnes died in 1930 at the age of 89. In 1937, Mrs. Amy Lane, one of Barnes' daughters, sold the home to the Rockford Park District for $12,000."

He was one of the people whose remains were re-interred in the cemetery from the old mausoleum. So all of these people are in a certain section with plaque markers. I have gone over it many times and Mr. Barnes' marker is not there. It is not next to his wife, whose marker I did find.
