Hall of Fame Major League Baseball Player. A right-handed pitcher, he was dubbed "The Big Train" for his sweeping sidearm delivery and blazing fastball. On August 2, 1907, he made his debut for the Washington Senators and spent the next twenty-one seasons with the team (1907 to 1927). He was a two-time American League Most Valuable Player (1913, 1924), was a member of the 1924 World Series champion Senators, had ten successive seasons of 20 or more victories, and is presently the all-time major league leader with 110 shutouts. He ended his playing career with a record of 417 wins (second to Cy Young), 279 losses, 531 complete games, 110 shutouts, 34 saves, 3,508 strikeouts and a 2.17 earned run average. He also managed the Senators (1929 to 1932) and Cleveland Indians (1933 to 1935), and was one of the first five players elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936. He died of a brain tumor at age 59 in Washington, D.C.
