Cpl. Jack L. SMITH, a longtime Columbia Police Officer, was found dead in his home Wednesday afternoon. SMITH, 53, had served the Columbia Police Department for 21 years.
The cause of death had not yet been determined. "At this point, I just don't know (the cause)," Dr. Charles Manning, Boone Assistant Medical Examiner said, "It (SMITH's death) was sudden and unexpected.
Hired by the department in 1959 as a patrolman, SMITH was promoted to the rank of Corporal on October 29, 1967, and assigned to radio dispatching. He became a Station Corporal in 1979 when the Police Department moved to its present location at Sixth and Walnut Streets.
"I'm very saddened about it," Major Carl Antimi said. "I liked the person."
