Pvt. Curren was 18 years old when he enlisted on 7/24/1861 at N.Y.C.. He was mustered in on 8/14/1861. Pvt. Curren's 73rd N.Y. was part 3rd Corps Commander Dan Sickle's ill conceived plan to find higher ground on July 2, 1863, at Gettysburg Pa.. His new position, far forward of the rest of the army, invited attack, and the Confederates obliged him. General James Longstreet (arguably Lee's best Corps Commander) attacked him around the Wheatfield and Peach Orchard late in the afternoon. After hard fighting, Sickles was driven back, sustaining many casualties. Private Curren was severely wounded and died of those wounds on 7/18/1863 at Gettysburg.
