Anna Bowermaster was one of seven children born in Iowa to Frederick Bowermaster, 1825-1908, and second wife, Mary C. Roberts, 1835-1911. "Annie's" father left Ohio for Iowa after the death of first wife Amanda Pyle, bringing with him two young children from that union.

Anna enjoyed a marriage of only seven years to John Newton Allum that produced one daughter. She died of tuberculosis in 1900 at age 31.
