Olympic Athlete. Taiwan's first Olympic medal winner. After training for the decathlon, he won a gold medal at the 1954 Asian Games in Manila, along with the nickname, "Asian Iron Man". After winning another gold medal at the 1958 Asian Games in Japan, he traveled to the United States to study at the University of California at Los Angeles. He competed in the 1960 Rome Olympics, where his UCLA teammate, Rafer Johnson, took the gold medal in the decathlon, and Yang took the silver medal. It was the first-ever medal won by Taiwan. In 1963, Sports Illustrated declared him the "World's Best Athlete". After competing again in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, he served on Taiwan's Olympic Committee for most of the rest of his life.
