Tom was a Private in the Civil War, between 1861-1865, fighting for the Confederate side, in the Engineer Troops, Company H. He enlisted at Hamilton, Hamilton Co., Texas, at the age of 18. He served under Captain James M. Rice.

Tom was a farmer, raising crops, cotton, and some livestock. He married Anna Estella Steifer November 16, 1877 in Smith County, Texas, and they raised nine children. They lived in Smith County until 1900, when they moved to Williamson County. By 1917, they were living in Roanoke, Denton Co., Texas, where he was living when he passed away. He passed away at home, from bronchitis and senility. He was a widower at his time of death.
