Charles William Barns was a son of Edward Howard Barns and his first wife, Mary Ann Letcher Barns. He had, at least, two full siblings, known by name and, possibly, two other full siblings, unknown by name at this time. He had six younger half-siblings from his father's second marriage to Ann/Anna Beard.

Charles William Barns married Caroline Elizabeth Stockwell on November 28, 1871. They had eight children.

He was 91 years old at the time of his death.
