US Army officer. Laidley graduated from West Point in 1842 and was assigned to the Ordnance Corps. He served in the Ordnance detachment that accompanied Winfield Scott during the Mexican War, and commanded the Frankford Arsenal and the Springfield Armory during the Civil War, producing weapons for use by the Union Army. During his 40 year career Laidley commanded six armories and arsenals, authored two Army field manuals, and designed, constructed and implemented use of a mobile forge that enhanced cavalry operations. He also received eight patents for his inventions, including a breech loading rifle. He was a Colonel when he retired to New York City in 1882. Laidley died while en route to Green Cove Springs, Florida on a trip to restore his failing health.
