Ryland William Atwood, Sr was the son of Henry Clay Atwood and his wife, Ada Blake Williams. He was born in what was then Princess Anne County, Virginia (now city of Virginia Beach). He was married to Violet V. Cooper in 1919.

Ryland's mother, Ada Blake Williams, was the daughter of Theodore F. Williams and his wife, Elizabeth V. James. Ada was born on March 6, 1878 in Princess Anne County, Virginia and died November 12, 1902. Ada's father, Theodore was born on March 20, 1853 and he died March 30, 1926. Ada's mother, Elizabeth was born on January 22, 1854 and she died on June 16, 1929. They are all buried in the Atwood Farm Cemetery (aka. James/Davis Family Cemetery), a small private family cemetery on Charity Neck Road in southern Virginia Beach (formerly Princess Anne County).

"Ryland Williams Atwood, Sr., 67, of Route 1, the husband of Mrs. Violet Cooper Atwood and a son of Henry Clay and Mrs. Ada Blake Atwood died in a hospital Friday.
A lifelong resident of the Virginia Beach area, he was a member of Charity United Methodist Church and Princess Anne Masonic Lodge 25.
He was a retired employe of Oceana Naval Air Station Fire Department and was employed by Pungo Ferry Bridge at the time of his death.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Ryland W. Atwood Jr. of Norfolk and Henry G. Atwood of Virginia Beach; a daughter, Mrs. Leah Ray Grass of Virginia Beach; four sisters, Mrs. W.E. Davis of Norfolk, Mrs. Edna Hosick of Gastonia, N.C., Mrs. Marion Joecinex of Long Island, N.Y. and Mrs. Alice Mae Rickman of Leesville, La.; a brother, Jack Atwood of Virignia Beach; and three grandchildren.
The body will be taken from Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside, to Charity United Methodist Church for a funeral service Monday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. H.A. White. Burial with masonic rites will be in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the services.
