Nick Guglielmi (Guglielmo) was racing at Lincoln Heights' Ascot Speedway when
his car skidded and was struck by another race car driven by Jack Petticord. The
cars locked together and crashed, killing Guglielmo as well as Police Sergeant
J.D. Cornwall who was attempting to get out of the way of the oncoming crash and
was hit by the cars. Petticord suffered a fractured skull, broken leg and other
minor injuries, only three others were injured in the crash. Ascot Speedway was
a great attraction in Los Angeles from 1924 to 1936, attracting crowds numbering
10,000, every day people to major movie stars. On January 25, 1936, race car
driver Al Gordon and his riding mechanic Spider Matlock were killed in a crash.
The races ended at that time and eight months later the abandoned grandstands
burned to the ground. Nick is interred at Hollywood Forever in Los Angeles.
