Lois June Brookes, 101, died Dec. 15, 2007 in Newport.
She was born to L.E. and Anna (Mitchell) Caviness on June 13, 1906 in Joseph, Ore.
She was a fourth generation Oregonian, her great-grandparents having traveled the Oregon Trail by wagon in 1852.
She graduated from Jefferson High school in Portland in 1925 and attended Northwestern Business College.
After retirement she wrote for the community newspaper while wintering in Mesa, Ariz., learned to make jewelry, and honed her skill at bridge to become a master teacher. She maintained her independent nature to the end.
She was preceded in death by her husbands John Charles Ohm and Kenneson H. Brookes; sisters, Nadine Killets and Grace Baker; and grandson David McKinney.
She is survived by her son John C. (Gail) Ohn of Depoe Bay; daughter Carolyn Moore of Mesa, Ariz.; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and three nieces and two nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007 at Grace Memorial Episcopal Church in Portland conducted by Father Jay McMurren, with a reception following at the home of her grandson David Ohm. Interment will be at Riverview Cemetery in Portland. Memorial contributions are suggested to the charity of your choice.
