Joseph lived in Salt Lake for some time after arriving in the Valley. He came west with his first wife. There is no mention of children coming with him so he may have lost one in Nauvoo when they lived there. He was a merchant in Quincy and Nauvoo and also later in Panguitch . He was the first bishop of the 17th Ward in Salt Lake and the first U.S. Postmaster in Salt Lake .
He was on the committee that helped draft the Consitution of Deseret .
He was a highway surveyor and U.S. Marshall of Utah .
He helped obtain territorial government for Utah . He obviously had some education and used it in working for the community and people and church he loved. He went on a mission and held various callings in the church and in the state.
Sometime before his death, he was made a patriarch. He practiced polygamy. Nothing is known about his second wife.
