After enlistment, he served in Co. F, Shanks Regiment, Shelby's Brigade, Cavalry. He was transferred to Co. G, 8th Missouri Infantry and served there until paroled on June 8th, 1865.
He and Nannie Sparkman were married on September 19, 1869, in Benton County, Arkansas. They had six children: Henry, John, William C., James M., Emmor W., and Edna Mae. He and Nannie lived in Benton County, Arkansas. After Nannie's death, Jim made his home with his children.
