Bessie was the daughter of John and Sarah Frances Harris Mattocks. She married Simeon Brooks Chapin in Chicago, Illinois on October 5, 1892 and was the mother of four children: Simeon, Virginia, Elizabeth and Marietta. Bessie was widely read, a gracious hostess and active in many charitable organizations. A library in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is named in her honor. She passed away at her home in Pinehurst, North Carolina. She was survived by a son, S. B. Chapin Jr., New York; two daughters, Mrs. Francis Drake and Mrs. Kenneth A. Patterson; a sister, Mrs. William Silverthorne, and five grandchildren.
