Death of a U.S. Army Officer.
A correspondent of the Alta, writing from Benicia, under date of May 17th says:
I have a sad duty to perform in announcing through your paper the sudden death of Lieut. John Tipton, Third Artillery, U.S.A., attached to Capt. Ord's Light Battery. Lieut. Tipton was stricken with an apoplectic fit, yesterday afternoon and died at 1PM today. He had only arrived some eight days since with his company from Fort Vancouver and appeared, up to the moment of the fatal attack, to be in the very best health and spirits. Himself and wife had been the guests of the family of Surgeon R.H. Coolidge, U.S.A., who were unremitting in their kindness and attention to the deceased and all that medical skill could effect was rendered by this experienced surgeon and doctor. Lieut. Tipton was universally beloved by his brother officers and soldiers, but his obituary I must leave to others more capable of the task. He has gone from among us, at an early age and left inconsolable in her affliction his wife, but yesterday his young bride and now his widow. The last sad rites of the Episcopal service were administered him by the Rev. Mr. Buchanan, of Benicia.
