Edd Hansford Looney, 85, of Vansant, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Sept. 7, 2007, at Pikeville Methodist Hospital following an extended illness.

Born in Buchanan County, Va., he was the son of the late Daniel P. and Rosa McGlothlin Looney. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and was a member of Vansant Church of Christ, where he served as both Elder and Deacon until his sickness caused him to resign. Mr. Looney served in the United States Air Force during World War II and was a graduate of Grundy High School, Class of 1942. He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and was an insurance agent and car salesman for Rife's Chevrolet for many years. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Mr. Looney is survived by his wife of 65 years, Eleanor Widener Looney, Vansant; two daughters, Carol Looney Underwood, Jolo, Cheryl Looney and husband Terry Ratliff, Vansant; one son, Daniel C. and wife Brenda Looney, Vansant; four grandchildren, Joe and wife Tammy Ratliff, Vansant, Christy and husband Tommy Rose, Blountville, Tenn., Dwayne and wife Kelly Ratliff, Landrum, S.C., Shannon and husband J.C. Steffey, Norton, Va. Also survived by 10 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Virgie Looney Dotson, and one brother, Ted Looney.

Funeral services for Edd Hansford Looney will be conducted at 12 noon Monday, Sept. 10, 2007, at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel in Grundy, Va., with Evg. Mike Rife, Evg. Jerry Bliffen and Billy Cook officiating, with burial to follow in the Looney Family Cemetery on Deskins near Vansant.

Friends may call at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel today at 6 p.m. with services at 7:30 p.m.

Active pallbearers will be family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Elders and Deacons of Vansant Church of Christ.

The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be made in the form of a donation to Mountain View Health Care Center, P.O. Box 650, Elkhorn City, KY 41522.
