John Bockman was the Chief of Police in Libby, Montana. Chief Bockman was a World War I. Veteran and was the only Police Officer in Libby, Montana at the time, serving 3 years in that capacity as Police Officer and Chief. He died in the line of duty at age 32. A railroad worker had asked two men to leave the rail yard, but was shot and wounded by the pair of suspects. When Chief Bockman arrived on the scene, he ordered the men to raise their hands, but was met with gunfire. Chief Bockman managed to mortally wound one suspect, before being shot in the face. The suspect had a shoulder wound and died two days later in jail. Chief Bockman was survived by his wife, two sons, and parents.
