Siegfried Paul "Pish" Backhaus, 87, of Rockdale and formerly the Sharp community, died March 18 in a Temple hospital. Funeral services will be held today, March 22, at St. John's United Methodist Church in Rockdale with the Rev. John Warren of St. John's United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Backhaus was born May 17, 1919 in Sharp to Ernest Gus and Margaret (Westermann) Backhaus.
He started to work for Louis Gest Chevrolet in 1946 and opened Backhaus Cleaners in 1950.
He married Helen Janet Gamble on Sept. 5, 1940 in Cameron.
He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Rockdale and was a graduate of Sharp High School.
He was a veteran of WW II serving in the U.S. Army and served in campaigns with the 45th Artillery in Africa, Sicily, Italy and Germany.
He was a former member of the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department and the Rockdale Masonic Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Hermann Backhaus and brother-in-law, Harry Korthauer.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Backhaus of Rockdale; son, John Backhaus and wife, sue, of Austin; brother, Wilhelm Backhaus and wife, Artie, of Rockdale; sister-in-law, Edie Odell Korthauer and grandchildren, Kaitlyn Marie Backhaus and Jacob Paul Backhaus.
