US Congressman. Born in near Geneseo, Illinois, he attended Geneseo Academy, moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1868, where he engaged in the wholesale farm implement and seed business. He was Mayor of Cedar Rapids in 1878, member of the Linn County Board of Supervisors, (1882-84), president of Cedar Rapids Savings Bank and a member of the Iowa State House of Representatives, (1885-91). In 1891, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-second Congress, serving until 1893. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed his former business pursuits and was a member of the board of control for the Iowa State Institutions. He died at age 81 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
