Diptheria Which Breaks Out Among the Pupils Is the Cause.
Salt Lake, Nov. 27-Because a pupil in the Latter-day Saints university died Sunday of diptheria, that educational institution yesterday closed down for a week. It will be fumigated today, as will the Tabernacle and the Assembly hall, under the direction of the city health department. The heating apparatus of the university has been out of order for some time, and classes have been held in the Assembly hall. It is also feared that contagion has been carried into the Tabernacle.
The student who died was Miss Adaline Bond of 151 Green street. She was born and raised at Hennefer, this state, and her parents live up there now. She was stricken ill Saturday and about eighteen hours before her death on Sunday her disease was diagnosed. She was buried yesterday.
It is not known yet, of course, how widely the contagion has been circulated among the pupils of the University. A roommate of the dead girl, named Glenn, has unquestionably been exposed to the disease, though she has not been stricken with it yet. Other cases are feared.
Col. Willard Young, president of the University, made the official announcement last night that the university would be closed for a week, and that in the meantime a thorough fumigation would be made.
