Joseph was the 2nd of 5 children (2 sons and 3 daughters) born of Joseph Bennet and his wife Molly (Mary) Winslow. Joseph's siblings were: Deborah (b. 1762), Winslow (b. 1766), Elizabeth (b. 1770), and Priscella (b.1772).

Joseph enlisted, for 3 years, July 10, 1781, at Middlebury (Middleborough), Plymouth County Massachusetts , as a Private in Captain James Tisdale's Company, Colonel John Greaton's 3rd Massachusetts Regiment. He was mustered in at Boston and again at the Hutts, Boston, December 1781 and January, 1782 He later joined the Army at West Point in the Massachusetts Regiment commanded by Colonel Colonel Joseph Vose in Captain Williams Company. He continued to serve in the that Corps until December, 1783, when he was honorably discharged at West Point.

Joseph married, December 5, 1793, at Woodstock, Windsor County, Vermont, Susannah Simmons by whom he had 4 sons: Zebina Winslow (b 1797), Joseph Howland (1799-1881), Henry M. (1809-1830) and Essenetus A.

He was a landowner farmer and served in the War of 1812 from Stowe, Lamoille County, Vermont as Private in Nehemiah Perkins' Company, Colonel Peck's Regiment that sailed from Burlington, Chittenden County, Vermont to assist at the Battle of Plattsburg, Clinton County, New York in September, 1814. About 1820, he was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Stowe, Lamoille County, Vermont.
