US Soldier killed at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Mason enlisted in the army on July 11, 1870, at St Louis, MO. He was described as 5'11", gray eyes, sandy hair with a fair complexion. His civilian occupation was listed as brakeman. On July 17, 1870, Mason was assigned to Company F, 7th US Cavalry Regiment at Ft Hays, KS. His daily duties were listed as orderly to department headquarters and mail carrier. He was promoted to sergeant during his first enlistment. In July of 1874, Mason was demoted to private for "gross misconduct". When his enlistment expired on October 29, 1875, he reenlisted and was assigned to Company E, 7th US Cavalry. On November 1, 1875, he was promoted to corporal. During the Little Bighorn Campaign, Mason was in charge of the "headquarters fatigue detail". At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Mason (and Company E) were assigned to Maj Reno's battalion. Mason was killed sometime during the battle. It has been reported he was either killed during the Valley Fight or on Reno's Bluffs. His body was never identified. Mason and other soldiers killed during the battle were buried where they were found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.
