Carl Lengtat was born in East Prussia on July 3, 1861. He arrived in the U.S. on October 20, 1883 aboard the Elbe & immediately went to Missouri where he studied at a Lutheran Seminary.
In 1885 he was the pastor at the German Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois.
He married Anna Emilie Saeger, September 19, 1888 in Waco, Texas.
He appears in the Waco, Texas directory as pastor of the German Evangelical Zions Church from 1888 to 1891.
He is listed in the Texas School Journal as a member of the Texas State Teachers Association who was in attendance at the Texas Teachers Tenth Annual Convention in Galveston on Wednesday, June 26, 1889.
On 7 December 1889, he (along with 2 other men) was named on a deed for the purchase of land in Robinsonville, Texas as trustee of St. Johns Church of the German Evangelical Synod of North America.
Around 1891, he moved to Southern Illinois where he contracted consumption. By 1892, he is living in El Paso, Texas.
Carl & Anna had 3 children, Erna Emilie, born 1889 in Texas, Alma Anna, born 1891 in Illinois & Adolf Carl, born 1894 in Texas.
He is listed in Evan's & Worley's Directory of the City of El Paso, Texas, 1896-'97 on pages 103 & 141 as manager of the El Paso Coffin & Casket Co. (undertakers, funeral directors, embalmers).

Carl Lengtat, aged 31, died last night at the Hotel Dieu. He has been, ever since he arrived in El Paso five years ago, undertaker in Emerson & Berrien's parlors on El Paso St. For a month or so past, he has been suffering from blood poisoning & two weeks ago was removed to Hotel Dieu where an operation was performed, but it availed nothing & after two weeks of intense suffering, he passed away last night.
Carl Lengtat was formerly a Lutheran preacher at Waco, Texas & from there moved to Southern Illinois. There he contracted consumption & moved to this point for his health. He continually improved in health here, but in some way contracted blood poisoning which ended his life.
He leaves a wife & three children, but they will be provided for as he was insured in the arena of Hartford & Equitable of New York & also held a policy in the Sons of Hermann lodge, of which order he was secretary. He was also a member of Border Lodge No. 284, I.O.O.F. & Teutonia Singing Society & he will be buried under the auspices of all these orders.
Outside of those orders, Mr. Lengtat was not well known as he was a very quiet man, but his worth was better realized by those who knew him best & the German citizens of El Paso feel deeply his loss & give every sympathy to his bereaved family.
It was decided today that the funeral of Carl Lengtat would occur next Wednesday. Border Lodge I.O.O.F. is to furnish two pall bearers, the Sons of Hermann two & Teutonia Singing Society two. The remains were embalmed this morning & now lie in the undertaking parlors of Emerson & Berrien on El Paso St.
Drs. R. Justice & Wright held an autopsy over the remains of the late Chas. Lengtat & found that death resulted from blood poisoning, the end of the knee bone having for some time been fairly bathed in pus which had been absorbed into the circulation. The bone was all honeycombed."
