L. A. Wirey dies Thursday at age 89

FRANKLIN – L.A. Wirey, 89, a retired farmer and 50-year Franklin resident, died Thursday noon at Mickie's Nursing Home, where he had been a patient since March. He had been in failing health since 1962.

Born August 10, 1878, in Brown County, he was the son of John and Matilda Hanks Wirey. In 1898, he married Sadie E. Coy, who died early this year.

Educated in Brown County schools, he was a trustee and member of the board of Grace Methodist Church.

Funeral Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Vandivier-Parsley Funeral Home. Friends may call at any time, and burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery.

He is survived by four children, the Rev. Carl O. of Auburn; Wayne A. of New Albany; Dallas O. and Mrs. Herbert Beaman, both of Franklin; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A daughter died in infancy.

Funeral Services for L. A. Wirey, retired farmer, will be conducted in the Vandivier-Parsley Funeral Home in Franklin at 2:30 o'clock Saturday morning. Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery at Edinburg.

Friends may call at the funeral home at any time and are invited to attend the rites.

Ill since 1962, Mr. Wirey had been a patient at Mickie's Nursing Home since March 1967, and had been in serious condition since that time. He died there at noon Thanksgiving Day.

Mr. Wirey was the son of the late John and Matilda Hanks Wirey and was born in Brown County on Aug. 10, 1878. He was educated in the Brown County schools.

At Nashville on Feb. 12, 1898, he and the former Sadie E. Coy were married and they were the parents of five children.

The family came to this community 50 years ago and Mr. Wirey had spent his adult life farming.

He was a member of the Grace Methodist Church where he had served as a trustee, usher and on the board of directors.

The survivors are three sons and a daughter, the Rev. Carl O. Wirey, of Auburn; Wayne A. Wirey, of New Albany; Mrs. Herbert (Sophia) Beaman and Dallas O. Wirey, of Franklin.

Also remaining are five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Wirey died Feb. 25, 1967, and a daughter Alta Marie, died in infancy.
