Clarence Moses Berman enrolled as a Private in the "Governors Guards" on May 7th, 1898, at the age of 21. He was mustered into service as a Private in Company M of the 1st South Carolina Infantry Regiment, United States Volunteers, on May 24th, 1898, at Columbia, South Carolina. He served with the Company thoughout it service at Camp George H. Thomas, Chickamauga, Georgia, and Camp Cuba Libre, Florida, before being mustered out of service with the Company on November 10th, 1898, at Columbia, South Carolina.
