BERGMAN--Gus E. Bergman dies today, rites Saturday
Retired Columbus industrialist Gus E. Bergman, 72, of 1821 17th street, died this morning at St. Mary's hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Gass Funeral chapel, with Fr. E. William Pounds officiating, and burial will be in Columbus cemetery with military graveside rites. The body is to lie in state at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Friday.
Mr. Bergman became associated with the Reece Wooden Sole Shoe Company here in 1932, and was vice president until his retirement in 1961.
He was born May 10, 1894, in Hastings, the son of Ernest C. and Anna Petersen Bergman. The family moved to Schuyler when he was two years old, then in 1908 came to Columbus.
Mr. Bergman attended elementary school in Schuyler, was graduated from Columbus high school and attended Columbus business college.
A veteran of World War I, he served in the U.S. Air Corps from 1917-19 and saw duty in France with the 72nd Aerial Squadron.
On returning, Mr. Bergman was in the monument business with his father until becoming associated with the Reece company.
He was married to Angelene Reece Aug. 14, 1919, in Columbus.
Mr. Bergman was affiliated with Hartman Post No. 84, American Legion. A charter member of the former Wayside Country Club, he was later a member of Elks Country Club.
Surviving are his wife; one son, Reece Bergman of Columbus; three daughters, Mrs. R.E. (Bette) Wilson of Madison, Mrs. William D. (Mary Jane) Marsden of Thousand Oaks, Cal., and Mrs. Donald J. (Dorothy) Slonecker of Columbus, eight grandchildren and one great-grandson; and a sister, Mrs. Tom Dailey of Wahoo.
His parents preceded him in death.
