My late husband, Wiley Simmons, and I adopted Muffie when he was two months old. It is rather amusing where this "adoption" took place.

It was a sunny weekend day, a little after 4 p.m., in Bakersfield, California. Wiley and I had just gotten off work from the sheriff's department; he as a KCSO dispatcher and me as a Typist Clerk II in Records & Identification. We were headed home when Wiley pulled over to park at the curb outside a liquor store so he could get some beer. I sat in the car waiting since he said he'd be back soon.

After almost fifteen minutes he came out of the store not carrying beer, but he was carrying something small and wiggly. He walked up to my door and said to roll down my window, so I did, and he immediately placed this adorable, black with tan markings, brown-eyed little puppy onto my lap. He said he had seen a guy inside the store who was trying to sell this "blue-blooded" Toy Poodle for $50. Well, I really had to laugh because I knew for a fact that was a crock. I had a registered Toy Poodle at home! But, in all fairness, Wiley wasn't by nature a Toy Poodle sort of guy when we married in 1976; but that would change over a period of time with him learning more about Toy Poodles than he ever wanted to know. Heh, heh.

Anyway, with the little puppie giving me kisses and winning my heart over by the second, I told Wiley that $25. was a more "appropriate donation" to the guy than $50., so he went back into the store and the guy promptly accepted the $25. for the puppy. We headed home with our cute little puppy, naming him "Muffie" before we even arrived home. My Toy Poodle "Trissie" accepted "Muffie" after a few days, and we had two devoted "babies" that went everywhere with us, when appropriate. Six months after Wiley's medical retirement from the department, we had to have Trissie put down at age 17, but she had enjoyed a loving, happy life.

Muffie moved to Oregon with us in April 1982 and, as you can tell by the pictures, he was happy and loving just wanting to be with us everywhere we went. He was truly a delightful character. He taught himself to sit up as if saying to everybody, "Hey, look at me!" He was a loyal, loving companion to the end of his days, slipping ever so peacefully away from us to "Rainbow Bridge."

Wiley and I loved Muffie a lot, and we missed him so much that we cried for months. We finally decided to look for another dog. We found a two month old female, Toy Poodle, and named her "Lily." She was our dainty little princess, but her *daddy* Wiley passed away May 1, 1998. I remarried and then my little *princess* had a loving "stepfather."
