Company M, C.S.A., 3 Missouri Cavalry. Gates was one of six Confederate POW's executed by the Union Army to avenge the death of Major James Wilson. Wilson and his 6 man patrol were turned over to Major Timothy Reeves' about Oct.3 near the battle of Pilot Knob. Wilson and his men were found a few days later. The Confederate soldiers executed in retaliation for the death of Major Wilson were Pvt's. H.H. Blackburn, John Nicholds, George Bunch, Asa Ladd, G.W. Mineckin and James Gates.
