Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Helped to raise a company of Pennsylvania "Bucktails" at the beginning of the war. Served as a 1st Lieutenant and Acting Signal Officer on the staff of Major General Nathaniel Banks before promoted to Major of the 13th Pennsylvania Reserves. He was then appointed Colonel and commander of the 190th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "Conspicuous gallantry and meritorious services throughout the war".
