On 22 Jan 1852, Sarah married Malachi Murden. When she became a Civil War widow on May 20, 1863, Sarah was left to raise their five children, Claudius, Pemmy, William Henry, Mary Jane (Mollie) and Joshua on her own.
Sarah died at the home of her son, William. Her sons Joshua and Claudius preceeded her in death. Sarah was buried in the Murden family plot owned by her brother-in-law, Peter L. Murden. Peter is buried nearby with his wife, Emily and their son Charles .
