Mary Elizabeth (Spice) Halliwell, a daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Whitmore) Spice, was born on 4 May 1839 in Wooster, Wayne Co., Ohio. She died 19 Feb 1920 in Doylestown, Wayne Co., Ohio and was laid to rest on the Feb 21st at Mound Hill Cemetery in Seville.

Mary married, 27 Feb 1862 in Wayne Co., Ohio, Levi Halliwell, a son of Joseph Halliwell and Catherine Coolman. The couple's license was issued 25 Feb 1862 to Levi Halliwell and Mary Spice. Nuptials were performed by Wiriman (sic) Cotton, J.P. The Return was filed 5 Jul 1862 and signed by Probate Judge, Thomas S. Johnson and Deputy Clerk, J. B. Sonvill [Wayne Co. Ohio Marriages Vol. 6, p65].

The newly wedded couple made their home in Seville where reared four children, namely -- Emma Catharine b. 30 May 1862, m. (1) Orlin A. Dawson, (2) William B. Becker. Amanda Cora b. 16 Nov 1865, m. Perry P. Hoff. Frank Millard Halliwell b.21 Aug 1868, m./div. Ella I. (Hoff/Huff) Eby. Mary "Minnie" Elizabeth b. 5 Aug 1872, m. Andrew A. Swagler.

In 1898 following her husband death, Mary and her son Frank, and her daughter Minnie's son, William James Clark Jr., removed to 181 Hamilton St. in Cleveland where they were enumerated on the 1900 census [Roll: T623-1252, p258A] Mary Hallowell, head of household, 50, widow, mother of 4 - 4 living, born May 1850 in Ohio, father born in Pennsylvania, mother born in Maryland, rents the home. Frank son, 32, single, born Aug 1867 in Ohio as were his parents, occupation: Blacksmith Car, unemployed one month. J. William Clark, grandson 6, born Aug 1893 in Ohio as were his parents. Also in the household -- George Schuman a roomer, 45, single, born Mar 1855 in Wisconsin as were his parents, occupation: Trunk maker. Charles Herman a roomer, 20, born Jan 1880 born in Ohio as were his parents, single, occupation: Machinist.

Her daughter, Minnie, married 26 Dec 1869, Andrew A. Swagler with whom she had three additional children. In 1917, Mary and her daughter's family moved to Doylestown. Here Mary quietly passed from this life at the age of 81. Her death was recorded at the Ohio Bureau of Vital Statistics as Mary Elizabeth Halliwell, aged 80y 7 m 15d, a white, widowed female, died 19 Feb 1920 in Doylestown, Wayne Co., Ohio. Cause of Death: Parolysia due to cerebral hemorrhage. Contributing Cause: Gall stones, and inflammation of Gall Bladder. Occupation: Housekeeper. She was born 4 May 1839 in Wooster, Wayne Co., Ohio to Joseph Spice, born in PA, and Elizabeth Whitman (sic), born in Maryland. Burial: 21 Feb 1920 in Seville, Ohio. Undertaker: H.A. Clark, Doylestown, Ohio. Informant: (daughter) Mrs. Allen Swagler. NOTE: Her middle name was listed as Frances on her children's death certificates.

Inscription

On 30 Jun 1898, a cemetery deed was issued to Frank M. Halliwell, son of Levi and Mary, for family plot 625, which consists of five spaces in row 3, east of West Drive. A single large black granite stone, shared by Levi, his wife Mary and their son Frank. Inscriptions: Levi Halliwell| 1 May 1839 - 1897; Mary Spice | his wife | 1839 - 1920; On the reverse we find: Frank M Halliwell | 1868 - 1959.
