US Congressman. He graduated from Harvard University in 1784, studied law and was admitted to the bar, but relinquished his practice of law to engage in commercial pursuits. He was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives 1797 to 1802, 1812 and 1813. In 1803, he served in the State Senate and as a member of the Executive Council of the State in 1805, 1808, 1813, 1814, and 1819 to 1821. He was elected as a Federalist to the Eleventh Congress in 1809 and was not a candidate for renomination in 1811. From 1810 to 1818, he was overseer of Harvard University and president of the board of directors of the Theological School at Cambridge. His last public office was as a member of the convention to revise the constitution of the State of Massachusetts in 1820.
