Hannah Olson was born in Kyrkhult, Blekinge, Sweden, October 12, 1860, and passed away at her home near Burdick on the morning of August 6, 1930, after an illness of many years.
She came from Sweden to Galesburg, Illinois September 1882 and moved again in 1883 to McPherson County, Kansas. She was united in marriage to Gustaf William Carlson December 1, 1884. They moved to Morris County in 1885 and in 1908 just over in Marion County, the present home where Mrs. Carlson died. To this happy union were born four sons Albert, Edwin, Oscar and Herman and one daughter, Mrs. Edna Johnson.
Her husband, Mr. Gust Carlson, proceeded her in death four years ago.
Mr. and Mrs. Carlson became probationary members of the Swedish M. E. church of Burdick January 25, 1894 less then two years after the organizing of the church. They were admitted into full membership June 30, 1895. Mrs. Carlson was one of the oldest living members at her death. She was a member of the Dorcas Society and of the W. F. M. S. of the church. She was always interested in church work and made her contributions in every way possible. She lived a consistent Christian life.
Mrs. Carlson was a patient sufferer for some twenty-three years of her life with rheumatism, preceding her death. For the last six years she had been a helpless invalid practically. Her son, Herman, cared very tenderly for her during this time and did the housework. In fact, husband, sons and daughter sought always to relieve her of her suffering. In her recent illness all her children were present. All that loving hands and medical skill could do were unavailing. But God called her to himself. He said, "It is enough. Come up higher." The will of God be done. We would not call her back if we could. God has said, "Blessed are they that die in the Lord." She is enjoying heaven the hope of the years. Her suffering is past, for where she has gone "God shall wife away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain for the former things are passed away."
There is another vacant chair. Mother, grandmother, sister has gone. A dear friend, neighbor, church member has left us. But our loss is her gain.
Mrs. Carlson had a warm place in the heart for everybody, inquiring often as the their welfare. Her home was always open for prayer.
The funeral service was held Friday afternoon, August 8, at Burdick M. E. church. Rev. A. W. Samuelson of Washington, Kansas, formerly of Burdick, delivered a very sympathetic message in the Swedish language, the native tongue of Mrs. Carlson. Rev. Eugene Dickson brought a message in English and conducted the service assisted by Rev. Samuelson. The singing and music were very comforting. The floral offerings were beautiful. Mrs. Carlson was laid to rest at the Methodist cemetery.
To mourn her departure are four sons, Albert, Edwin, Oscar and Herman of Burdick, a daughter, Mrs. Edna Johnson of Delavan, nine grand-children, two brother, Olof and Swan Olson of Smolan, Kans., a sister Mrs. Cecilia Peterson of Stark, Kans., other relatives and a host of friends. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to these bereaved ones.
