Born in Stewart Co, Tennessee to Collin Green and Winnie Hogan.

Enlisted into Union army forces: Company K, 5th Regiment Iowa Cavalry at Fort Donelson, Stewart Co, Tennessee on 22 May 1863.
Engaged in action throughout Middle Tennessee, including the Tullahoma Campaign in June 1863, led by Union General William Rosecrans.

In February 1864 Co. K, 5th Reg. Iowa Cavalry was renamed Company C, Brackett's Battalion Minnesota Cavalry, led by Major Alfred B. Brackett.

Through 1864 and 1865 joined with Minnesota First Brigade under General Alfred Sully on the Northwestern Indian Expedition into the Dakota Territory.

Engaged with Sioux tribes at Battle of Killdeer Mountain on 28 Jul 1864.

Mustered out of service at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, on 24 May 1866.

Samuel's older brother William L. Green served for the Confederate Army, as did his younger brother John Green, who was killed in the Battle of Nashville.

After his service Samuel returned to the between the rivers area. Samuel married Mary Josephine Futrell on 10 October 1867 and they settled into Trigg Co, Kentucky, where Samuel lived a peaceful life as a farmer.

Samuel passed away at home on 16 Aug 1918.
