Lenora Hatch Coburn
LOGAN, Utah –
The beautiful spirit of "Aunt Norie" Lenora Hatch Coburn joined that innumerable caravan which mores at night to the "mysterious realm where each shall take his chamber in the silent hall of death," and thus entered into the Paradise of God at the age of 81 yrs.
She was born in Swan Lake, Idaho, on Oct. 19, 1918 to Daniel George and Elsie Mae Gooch Hatch. She grew up in Oxford and graduated from the "university of Oxford" and was enrolled at Utah State University for two years, after which she joined the Red Cross in Salt Lake City. When her brother, Ronald, was wounded in Germany and shipped home to Seattle, she went there so she could visit him at the hospital.
She acquired a job at the Puget Sound Power and Light company in Seattle. She came back to Oxford on vacation and while there, she met and married Jack Hill Cobern on Dec. 19, 1947, in the Logan LDS Temple.
She operated a small grocery store in Oxford while Jack farmed and worked at various jobs. They spent on summer at Chesterfield, Idaho and the next year they moved to Aberdeen, Idaho, where they began developing a tract of desert land. While in Aberdeen, she was called to the American Falls stake Sunday School board, as well as secretary for the stake UWMIA board.
In December of 1960, her youngest brother, Ferris, was called on a mission to Rarotonga, and Lenora and Jack decided to stay with her mom in Clarkston while Ferris was gone. In 1962, they bought a small dairy farm in Smithfield, where they lived until they retired and moved to "the Island" in Logan.
While in Smithfield, she was asked to be the secretary of the irrigation company, where she served with at least four presidents. At first I was tedious figuring and hand work, then she bought a computer and learned how to use it in making out the may schedules that were required for about 18 ditches for the summer each year, along with letters for the numerous meetings that were called in trying to get the sprinkler system in. It was a challenge and a lot of work, but she willingly did her job.
In April of 1980, she, along with her husband, were called to be workers in the Logan LDS Temple. Then in 1989, they were called to serve in the Mexico City Temple. Upon their return home, they were called to work with the Spanish-speaking members in the Logan Temple, where she served until the time of her death.
In July of 1953, Jack's brother's wife died. At this time, Lenora took in his three small children, Faye, Peggy and Denny, and loved and raised them as her own. Then later, she took in three of Faye's children, Tina, Eddie and Michael, and got them started to School while their mother was recovering from an illness. She has been a wonderful wife and mother, and will be sorely missed by all who loved and know her.
She is survived by her husband, Jack H Coburn, Three brothers, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Belton Gooch Hatch and Ronald Gooch Hatch.
