Specialist Four Donald Kirby Cheek was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army Selective Service and a Draftee, SP4 Cheek served our country until December 8th, 1968 in Hua Nghia, South Vietnam. He was 20 years old and was married. It was reported that Donald died from small arms fire or grenade. His body was recovered. SP4 Cheek is on panel 37W, line 062 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for less than a year.
He was a hometown friend and RVN Vet 35 years ago: Kirby, I have often thought about you and this day 35 years ago. I remember my Mom sending me word that you had died, and I couldn't believe you were really gone. I don't know why I made it back and you didn't, but I hope I can live up to whatever God has planned for my life. You are still missed, and will never be forgotten. You are not forgotten. If you are able, save for them a place inside of you and save one backward glance when you are leaving for the places they can no longer go. Be not ashamed to say you loved them, though you may or may not have always. Take what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own.
