He was a hometown friend and RVN Vet 35 years ago: Kirby, I have often thought about you and this day 35 years ago. I remember my Mom sending me word that you had died, and I couldn't believe you were really gone. I don't know why I made it back and you didn't, but I hope I can live up to whatever God has planned for my life. You are still missed, and will never be forgotten. You are not forgotten. If you are able, save for them a place inside of you and save one backward glance when you are leaving for the places they can no longer go. Be not ashamed to say you loved them, though you may or may not have always. Take what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own. And in that time when men decide and feel safe to call the war insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind." Ron Rhoades.

Donald, you were a fine Soldier. The world is a lesser place since you did not return. Even after 30 years,I can still see your wonderful smile. Your Squad Leader, Sgt Richard Shedis, 2/12 25th Infantry Division.

Cheek, I think of you and all my brothers even though its been over 30 years you our still in my mind and heart as though it was yesterday. Ronnie H. Sword, Company A, 2/12 25th Infantry Division.

Kirby, The world is dimmer because your bright smile is no longer here. But in my memory you're always laughing. Penny Craver.

My mom has said a lot about Kirby Cheek, and I am glad to have finally found you. I have never been to the Vietnam Memorial so this is very special to me, and I am sure my mom will think so as well. Thank you. Your Cousin, Amy Whitfield.

I am your Great-Great Grandson: You are still remembered. I remember my Mom always talkin about you and I just want to say the kids are doing good and everyone loves you. By the way, we all miss you. James Cheek.

My Uncle In-Law, Uncle Kirby. I have thought of my uncle, Kirby often, although uncle by marriage, I still remember when we found out you were missing in action. A December never goes by that I don't remember the heartache that my family and your family felt when we lost you. I was only 13 years old at the time. We still love you and miss you, Kirby. You were such a joy to be around, I will never forget you and your great loving personality. Pam Hussey, 1648 Needham Grove Road, Robbins NC 27325.

I was beside him when he was killed. Just remembering that day. He was a great guy and was standing right behind me when we were ambushed and he was killed by a bomb that threw me several feet in the air. He never knew what hit him. If some of his family want a picture or 2, I am sure I still have some. Lester Rogers 918-440-3398, P.O. box 122 Dewey Ok 74029 Washington.

He is the Son of Mr Tilden Grant Cheek and Mrs Dulcie Susan William Cheek. Husband of Mrs Wanda G Cheek of Robbins, North Carolina.

He served with Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, "Tropic Lightning", USARV.

He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Bronze Star Medal, The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and The Good Conduct Medal.
