John William Murrow, the son of William Murrow, was born in February 1787 in Orangeburg County, South Carolina. He was a Baptist minister descended from Irish immigrants. He was married to Mary Amelia Louisa Badger Murrow, and they had seven children: Mary Amelia Murrow Pate Downs, Rev. William J. Murrow, Oliver H. Murrow, Rev. Joseph Samuel Murrow, Rev. Jonathan Badger Murrow, Elizabeth R. Murrow Van Brackle, and Dr. John Adams Murrow. He and his wife also partly raised two of their grandchildren, Edna Josephine Pate Downs and William James Pate, after their daughter's divorce. In their old age he and his wife lived with their son Dr. John Adams Murrow. He died at age 80 in 1867 in Bryan County, Georgia and is buried at Old Hopeful Cemetery (also known as Hopeful Cemetery or Stevens Grove Cemetery) near Pembroke, Bryan County, Georgia. His tombstone is badly in need of repair. I hope one of his descendants will add his photo to this site.

Thanks so much to Murrow family researchers for much of this information. Any errors, however, are mine alone. Please go to the "edit" link on this site with any corrections or additions. Can anyone read the inscription at the bottom of the tombstone?
