Isaac served in Co. B, 46th Illinois Infantry and was engaged in action at Shiloh and Vicksburg. He was married briefly to Catharine Swerley and divorced in 1864. He came to Iowa after the war and married Madora Cain in 1868 but she died the following year in Franklin County. His third marriage was in 1870 in Hardin County after which he came to Dallas County. By trade he was a carpenter.
