English Nobleman and Politician. 1st Earl of Cromer. In 1877 he was chosen to represent British interests in Egypt. He served first in the army and later as a diplomat in the Ionian Islands, in Malta, and in Jamaica. Finally he became a consul-general in Egypt. He wrote "Modern Egypt", "Ancient and Modern Imperialism", and three volumes of "Political and Literary Essays".
