James William Andrew - was the son of Calvin and Susan (Shields) Andrew and the grandson of James and Elizabeth (Glasser) Andrew, both natives of North Carolina and James believed to be of Welsh descent.
Calvin was born Dec. 5, 1821 in North Carolina and died Aug. 27, 1895 in Huntington County, IN. James William's grandfather, James, was born Feb. 15, 1792, and died Jan 10, 1851. His grandmother, Elizabeth (Glasser) was born Dec. 13, 1794 and died at the age of 103 on Dec. 27, 1897.
James William Andrew was born in Clinton County, OH on March 8, 1847 and died Sept. 18, 1908 in Warren, IN. He came to Huntington County with his parents in about 1854 by wagon and remained at home until the age of 21. He then engaged with Whitson Bros. of Warren to learn the harness and saddling trade for two years. Then, due to ill health he worked as a clerk in J.J. Hilterbrand and Company General Merchandise Store until 1875 when he formed a partnership, with his father-in-law Jonathan Irwin, in the grocery business. In 1881 he opened his own grocery having purchased the stock of the Shafer Grocery.
James married on Sept. 17, 1871 Sarah Elizabeth Irwin the daughter of Jonathan and Asenath (Logue) Irwin of Warren, IN. Sarah was born Aug. 28, 1850 Warren, IN and died April 6, 1924 Warren, IN. They had four living children; Rosa, who was borth March 3, 1873 and died in 1919. She married in June 1909 to Charles L. Maybe. Frank Edwin, who was born Oct. 9, 1874 and died Aug. 26, 1940. He married Nov. 24, 1898 to Nora Elizabeth O'Neil. Cora, who was born Dec. 5, 1877 and died Sept. 18, 1955 in Illinois. She was married Oct. 7, 1896 to Alva Zike. Grace, who was born Feb. 19, 1884 and died in Bluffton, IN Sept. 18, 1968. She was married to Charles Borne of Bluffton, IN on Dec. 25, 1905. An "infant son" was deceased.
James's siblings were: Endsley, Riley B., John R., Charles, Elizabeth, Miles and Mary J. A half-brother and sister were Alice B. Andrew and Daniel Andrew.
