He was one of the 91 miners who perished in the Sunshine Mine Disaster, the deadliest event in Idaho history. A memorial statue stands over twelve feet tall at exit 54 of I-90, at the base of the Big Creek Canyon, between the towns of Kellogg and Osburn, Idaho.
Louis had previously lived in Kimball, South Dakota, and worked at the Homestake Mine at Lead, South Dakota. Another man lost in the Sunshine fire had worked in the Homestake Mine. His name was Lyle Rathbun.
Louis married Delores Peparek. Survivors are daughters Donna, Kathryn, Suzan, Patricia, Constance, and Marlyn; his mother, Mrs. Angelina Goos, Sioux Falls; four brothers, John, Sioux Falls; Albert, Chamberlain; Nick and Raymond, Kenosha, Wis.; and five sisters, Mrs. Marie Raisch, Kimball; Mrs. Rita Lunz, New Ulm, Minn.; and Mrs. Irene Sobek, Mrs. Zita Butcher, and Mrs. Helen Paclik, Sioux Falls.
Two others from South Dakota died in the mining accident. They were Robert Anderson and Robert Follette Jr. both formally of Sturgis, South Dakota. Follette's father formally worked for the Homestake Mining Co. also.
