Nellie Irene Snyder Yost was born on June 20,1905 to Albert Benton and Grace Bell McCance Snyder in a sod house in north west Lincoln County Nebraska.At the age of two weeks she was carried on horseback to a ranch in McPerson County Nebraska.It was there that she suffered a childhood illness that permanently damaged her spine and slowed her growth to her eventual diminutive height of 4 feet,8 inches.She lived with her family in McPherson County until 1919 when the family moved to Maxwell,Nebraska where she graduated as class valedictorian in 1923.She then married David Harrison "Harry" Yost on July 6,1929 and the couple lived on a ranch in the Box Elder Canyon county south of North Platte Nebraska for 30 years.They had on son Thomas.Then Harry fell ill and died in 1968,after having been in the Grand Island Veterans Hospital for 5 years.During those years,as Nellie spent about 10 days out of each month at the hospital,she would sit by his bed side,writing manuscripts in long hand.After almost 17 years since her husbands death on Aug 30,1984 she married David Yost,a long time friend who was also an author,poet,and lecturer.David died on November 9,1991.Through the years Nellie Yost would travel thousands of miles each year.Although Nellie had never been to college,she had never took a correspondence course in writeing.She was sucessful,her first book,"Pinnacle Jake" was a recounting of her fathers stories about the west and ranching.It was published when Nellie was 46 years old.Eight books followed,"The Call of the Range","Medicine Lodge","The West that was Boss Cowman,"A Man as big as the West", "No Time on my Hands","Before Today",and "Buffalo Bill".Buffalo Bill was the Outstanding book of 1979.Her writing had also earned two Golden Spurs awards for non-fiction from the Western Writers of America.Finally her 10th and finnal book "Evil Obsession:The Annie Cook Story" was published in late October of 1991,Nellie was 86 years old.1 year after "Evil Obsession" was published old Nellie died. Not only will she be remembered for her books but also by her kind spirit."She loved life".
